Short answer
Every face is asymmetric. The question is never whether, only how much and where. This tool measures the deviation between paired landmarks on each side of your face and reports where the differences sit. Small asymmetries are universal, largely unnoticed by other people, and not something that needs correcting.

This is not a reassuring framing device. It is the finding.
Perfect bilateral symmetry does not occur in human faces. Paired structures develop separately, and small differences in growth, position, and soft tissue are the norm rather than the exception. If you measure precisely enough, you find asymmetry in every face, including every face you consider strikingly attractive.
What varies is degree. Most facial asymmetry sits below the threshold at which other people notice it in normal interaction, which is a much higher threshold than the one you apply to your own photos.
Why your face looks more asymmetric in photos than in the mirror
Three separate effects, and together they explain most of the distress this topic causes.
The mirror flips you. You have spent your whole life seeing a reversed version of your face. That reversed version is the one that feels correct, because familiarity drives preference. A photo shows you the unflipped version, which is what everyone else sees, and it looks subtly wrong to you specifically. This is a well documented effect and it is not about your face at all.
Lighting creates asymmetry that is not there. Any directional light source produces different shadow patterns on each side. A shadow under one cheekbone and not the other reads as a structural difference. This is the largest source of false asymmetry in photo-based measurement, and it is why a face can look noticeably asymmetric in one photo and symmetric in the next.
Lens distortion. A phone camera held close makes whichever side is nearer appear larger. Even a small head rotation combined with a short subject distance produces measurable apparent asymmetry.
What we do about it. The measurement runs a gate that checks head rotation and lighting uniformity before returning a result. When directional lighting or rotation is detected, confidence drops and the result flags it. A low confidence result usually means retake the photo in flat, even light, facing straight on.
What causes real asymmetry
Developmental. Paired structures grow independently and rarely identically. This accounts for most of the asymmetry in most people and is present from birth.
Sleeping position. Consistently sleeping on one side applies sustained pressure to that side of the face. The effect is small but real over decades.
Dental and orthodontic history. Missing teeth, extractions on one side, a habitual chewing side, or an untreated crossbite all affect the development and position of the lower face.
Habitual expression. Most people use one side of their face more actively when they speak and smile. Over time this produces differences in muscle bulk and in dynamic lines.
Sun exposure. Cumulative asymmetric exposure, notably from driving, produces documented differences in skin ageing between sides.
Injury. Fractures, particularly nasal and orbital, whether or not you remember them.
Medical causes, which are much less common: facial nerve palsy, hemifacial microsomia, torticollis, and some neurological conditions. The distinguishing feature is almost always sudden onset or progression, along with functional symptoms like drooping, weakness, or difficulty moving one side. That combination warrants a doctor, not a face measurement.
The golden ratio claim
You will encounter this constantly in this space, so it is worth addressing directly.
The claim is that facial attractiveness follows the golden ratio, approximately 1.618, and that faces closer to it are more attractive. It is usually presented alongside a mask overlay, and there is a small industry built on scoring faces against it.
The claim does not hold up well.
The association between the golden ratio and beauty in art and architecture is largely a modern attribution, applied retrospectively to works whose creators left no evidence of using it. Its extension to facial proportion came later still, most visibly through a proportional mask marketed in the 1990s and 2000s.
The measurement problems are severe. Faces contain many landmarks, which means many possible ratios, which means you can find something close to 1.618 in almost any face if you choose the landmarks after looking. Applied consistently, the correlation between golden-ratio conformity and rated attractiveness is weak.
There is also a substantial problem with the proportional templates themselves, which were derived from a narrow set of faces and do not describe the proportions typical across different populations. A mask that scores a face poorly for deviating from one population's average is measuring deviation from that average, not beauty.
What the research does support is that averageness and, more weakly, symmetry correlate with rated attractiveness. Those are real findings with reasonable replication. Neither of them is the golden ratio, and the effect sizes are modest.

What changes facial asymmetry
Honest answer: not much, and for most people nothing needs to.
Things with real effects:
- Dental and orthodontic treatment, where the asymmetry originates in the bite or in missing teeth. This is the most common genuinely correctable cause.
- Changing sleeping position, which prevents further contribution but does not reverse existing asymmetry.
- Addressing unilateral habits, such as always chewing on one side or resting your chin on one hand.
- Medical treatment where there is an underlying condition.
- Fillers and neuromodulators, which can balance soft tissue and muscle differences. This is a medical procedure and it is easy to make asymmetry worse with it.
- Surgery, for significant skeletal asymmetry, usually in conjunction with orthodontics.
Things with no effect: facial exercises marketed for symmetry, face yoga, massage tools, and anything involving deliberate impact.
How much asymmetry is worth thinking about
A practical threshold: if nobody has ever mentioned it, and you only notice it when studying photos of yourself, it is within the range that faces normally occupy.
The asymmetry worth attention is the kind that is visible in motion at conversational distance to other people, or that arrived suddenly, or that comes with functional symptoms.
Measuring your own face repeatedly and tracking small changes is generally not a productive activity, and if you find yourself doing it a lot, that is worth noticing. This tool is more useful used once than used weekly.
